ROSA BONHEUR MEMORIAL PARK

The Rosa Bonheur Memorial Park is a pet cemetery in Elkridge, Maryland. It was opened in 1935 as one of the first pet cemeteries in the world, and was the first in the United States to allow human owners to be buried with their pets.

In recent years, the owners of the cemetery had allowed the property to fall into decay. Since January 2006, I have been working with a group of volunteers (the Rosa Bonheur Society) who have been working to restore and maintain the Bonheur cemetery grounds in a respectable condition. We mow the grass, pick up trash, and do whatever general cleaning and maintenance is needed.

Volunteers are always welcome at Bonheur. Our nominal working hours begin at 11:00 am Sunday mornings (weather permitting).

The cemetery is at 7239 Washington Boulevard (U.S. Route 1) in Elkridge, right across the street from Meadowridge Memorial Park. The coordinates of the cemetery are latitude 39° 11' 5".3 N, longitude 76° 45' 36".9 W.

My dog Scruffy is laid to rest at Bonheur Memorial Park.

For more information, see the volunteers' Web sites:
